PT-141 is a synthetic peptide drug that acts on melanocortin receptors in the brain.

  • Primary medical use: Treating acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women.
  • How it works: It appears to increase sexual desire through central nervous-system pathways rather than by directly increasing blood flow to the genitals.
  • How Quickly it works: PT-141 is administered by subcutaneous injection, with sexual effects generally occurring within hours. It is used on an as-needed basis, rather than as a daily medication.
  • Not the same as Viagra/Cialis: Those primarily affect blood flow and erectile function; PT-141 primarily targets sexual desire/arousal pathways.
  • Common side effects: Nausea, flushing, headache, vomiting, fatigue, and temporary increases in blood pressure.
  • For both men and women

Yes—PT-141 (bremelanotide) can affect sexual desire and arousal in both men and women, but it isn't really a general-purpose “sexual performance” drug.

What it may do

PT-141 activates melanocortin receptors in the central nervous system. In clinical use, bremelanotide is intended to increase sexual desire rather than directly improve blood flow.

It may be relevant if the main problem is:

  • Low libido / lack of sexual desire
  • Difficulty becoming sexually aroused
  • Reduced sexual interest despite otherwise normal sexual function

If the issue is primarily erections, medications such as sildenafil or tadalafil work through a different mechanism and are generally more directly targeted at erectile function.
